Facts

  • The Augsburg Rathaus is the most important secular Renaissance building north of the Alps.
  • The stunningly ornate interior was lost to fire during baombardment in 1944. The exterior was repaired after the war. The interior was restored in time for a 1985 city jubilee.
  • The building's showpiece, the Goldener Saal (golden hall), features decorative doorways, a richly coffered ceiling, and wall paintings.
  • It is the masterpiece of "Stadtbaumeister" (city architect) Elias Holl and was an expression of the importance and self-confidence of the then free imperial city.
