Facts

  • St. Ulrich and Afra is the burial place of three saints associated with Augsburg: the early Christian martyr St. Afra (d. 304), the great Bishop Ulrich (d. 973), and Bishop Simpert (d. 807).
  • The tower was completed in 1594, though construction continued after that. The choir was completed in 1603/4, and the interior furnishings finished in 1612. The building itself is a late gothic basilica, while the furnishings are Renaissance and Baroque in style.
  • Among the "Baumeister" who worked on the church were Valentin Kindlin (1474-77), Burckhard Engelberg (1477-1512), and Hans Koenig after 1514.
