  • The hotel was converted into low-income apartments in 1981.
  • Features a moorage mast atop the northeast corner that was designed to tie down hot-air balloons and zeppelins at the time of its completion.
  • Once touted as being "the pride of Birmingham," the hotel has remained vacant since 1983 when public health officials declared the building uninhabitable.
  • The failed 2006 renovation called for a rooftop swimming pool where a water tower once stood.
  • The Leer Tower renovation was expected to commence in September 2005 and be complete by 2007.
  • The Leer Tower signage, which replaced the former Cabana signage, was first lit on Thursday, August 30, 2007.

  • The "C" atop the tower was removed and the familiar Cabana signage was replaced with new signage that that reads "Leer Tower" in 2007.
