Facts

  • Had its official groundbreaking in December 1938 and was dedicated as the Jefferson Hospital December 26-30, 1940.
  • Charles R. Skelton became the first admitted hospital patient on February 1, 1941.
  • On December 20, 1944, both this the Hillman Hospital and the Hillman Hospital Annex were aquired by the University of Alabama from Jefferson County to serve as part of the newly established Medical College of Alabama.
  • Renamed Jefferson Tower from Jefferson Hospital in June 1979.
  • This has dominated Southside's skyline since its completion in 1940.
