Facts

  • Initially proposed as a 22-story tower with a square footprint in the center of the site.
  • The controversial tower was ultimately approved in August 1963, provided the height of the structure not exceed 13 stories.
  • Designed by Charles Luckman, the 14th floor penthouse was added later and served as his personal residence.
  • The structural framework contains 3,000 tons of steel.
  • In 2007 the building underwent a major renovation that included a new facade and exterior lighting treatment.
