Facts

  • The City Hall/City Bank Building's design follows the classic tripartite formula of base, shaft and attic zone. Arched openings at the base and the attic give a Roman feel to a generally restrained composition.
  • This building contains 13 floors of office space topped by two tall, but small, mechanical penthouses.
  • The 162' given by the Sanborn Fire Insurance Company maps may be to the top of the first mechanical penthouse floor.
  • Due to superstition in America (and other countries) this building is common in that it does not count a 13th floor; the 14th floor is above the 12th floor.
  • This building was acquired in 1976 by the City of Jackson as the new city hall.
  • A renovation started in the spring of 2004 and finished in the summer of 2005 which completely replaced mechanical, electrical, and safety systems. The exterior was also completely renovated at a cost of over $1,000,000 to return it to its 1927 appearance.
