Facts

  • The Comerica Tower is an excellent example of the art deco/setback style of skyscraper design.
  • Its main elements are a blocky, stepped tower sitting atop a broad-fronted, four-story base.
  • The exterior of the steel and reinforced concrete structure is articulated with Bedford limestone piers alternating with vertical bands of windows and dark-colored, low-relief spandrel panels.
  • On the interior, a second floor banking hall, 71 by 126 feet in plan, has a domed and vaulted ceiling and features travertine walls and floors, grilles and rails of gray iron and white metal, and mural paintings by Chicago artist Alexander Rindskopf.
  • The 55-foot dome of the Heritage Dome Center, above the lobby of the building, underwent a major restoration which began in April 2005.
