Facts

  • The hotel was topped out in March 1987.
  • Work stopped in April 1987 after Turner Construction claimed it had not been paid and filed a $1.7 million lien against the project.
  • Snyder Corp. and Turner had agreed to a “guaranteed maximum price" for the project. As more detailed plans were developed, a dispute arose over whether or not the costs were covered by that guarantee.
  • Unable to resolve their differences, Snyder Corp. fired Turner Construction in June 1987 and lined up Siegfried Construction to finish the hotel.
  • Snyder Corp., which at the time was facing a total of nearly $13 million in liens, wasn’t able to line up the financing in order to resume construction. Snyder Corp. officially withdrew from the development in August 1988.
  • The hotel remained on hold until the city worked out a bailout agreement in 1990. The Hyatt Regency, which was originally slated to open in the fall of 1987, finally opened just before the spring of 1992.
