Facts

  • Built as the Leland Hotel, a first-class hotel and entertainment center, Fox Island Place is now used for apartments and offices.
  • The west façade is cantilevered a few feet over the Fox River.
  • The top-floor Sky Club ballroom on the top floor was a famous venue for blues performances and recordings.
  • This was the tallest residential building in Chicago's suburbs from the time of its conversion until 2003, when it was surpassed by Optima Views in Evanston.
  • The design was influenced by Italian hilltop towers.
  • When built, it was the tallest high-rise building in Illinois outside Chicago.
  • Above the 4th floor windows there is a series of animal plaques, and two lions guard the main entrance.
