Facts

  • The Ambassador originally opened as a 14-story hotel in 1919, with a 16-story addition following in 1920. It closed in November 1967.
  • Ramada Inns proposed to renovate the hotel in 1979, but the original proposal was rejected by the New Jersey Casino Control Commission because the plan looked too much like the old hotel. At the time, the state favored new construction over renovation.
  • Ramada revised their proposal with plans to raze half of the original hotel and rebuild it with a modern new design. The new plans were approved and the former Ambassador hotel officially reopened as the Tropicana in November 1981.
