Facts

  • Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960.
  • Served as the capitol of the United States between November 1783 and August 1784 when the Continental Congress met here.
  • This is the oldest statehouse still in legislative use within the United States.
  • Construction of the dome began in 1785 with an exterior completion date of 1788, and interior completion date of 1797.
  • Height from the base to main roof measures 60 feet.
  • The 1905 reconstruction was carried out in order to replace the older annexes built in 1858 and 1886.
