  • The Great Plains Life Building was the tallest building in West Texas when completed.
  • It is still the tallest building in Lubbock, and the tallest between Amarillo and Midland.
  • In 1970, downtown Lubbock was hit by an F3 tornado that did heavy damage to downtown. The Metro Tower suffered severe structural damage and was left vacant for some years afterward.
