This building was known as the National Reserve Life Insurance Building, and was the
company's home office, when the structure took a direct hit from the June 8, 1966
Topeka Tornado which killed 19 people in a 45 minute trek across the city's center.
Nearly year passed before engineers and architects could agree on whether the
building was salvagable from the wrenching the steel frame sustained in the tornado's
forceful winds.
