Kalamazoo Regional Psychiatric Hospital Water Tower
Kalamazoo Asylum for the Insane Water Tower
Structure in General
Stonemasons and bricklayers completed this brick and stone-faced tower in less than one year.
The main water tank at the top of the tower measures 40 feet in height, and 40 feet in diameter. It can hold more than 200,000 gallons of hard water. Two smaller tanks further down the tower can hold soft water.
The tower contains a wooden, spiral staircase that winds upwards through the tower until it reaches a platform at 100 feet. From there, you must climb a series of ladders to reach the top floor of the tower.
The State of Michigan put this structure on their demolition list in 1974, despite it being on the National Register of Historic Places. A committee called the Committee to Save the Tower was formed, and a year later enough funds were amassed to save the tower from demolition.
