Facts

  • Former First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson is quoted saying "The Norwood Tower is the most beautiful building in Austin. We used to call it frozen music".
  • The lobby's ceiling features 22 karat gold leaf as well as gold leaf on the exterior facade details.
  • Dedicated as a state historical landmark in 2007.
  • The Norwood Tower was the tallest commercial office building in Austin from 1929 until 1971 when 823 Congress was built. This is a very discieveing fact though since it was only the 5th tallest building in Austin in 1971. Texas State Capitol, University of Texas Tower and others were taller also.
  • The Norwood Tower was the first building in Austin to have an electric elevator. Several sources also note that this building was the 2nd fully air-conditioned office building west of the Mississippi River.
  • The Norwood Tower is owned by members of former President Lyndon Baines Johnson's family.
