Facts

  • Vista Tower surpassed the Aon Center to become the third tallest tower in Chicago.
  • The roof height also surpasses the roof of the Trump International Hotel & Tower, which still holds onto the second tallest title thanks its spire.
  • The main entrance is six levels above grade. Including the lower parking levels, the tower consists of 101 levels.
  • As the tower rises, there are setbacks at the 11th level (193 feet), 47th level (586 feet), and the 71st level (850 feet).
  • To counteract wind motion, the building will utilize a blow through level at the 83rd level, which will be the first of its kind in Chicago, as well as tuned liquid sloshing dampers.
  • The design is based on a geometric element called a "frustum," which is essentially a truncated pyramid.
  • The skyscraper will consist of three interconnecting stacks of these pyramids, alternating between conventional and inverted pyramids.
  • Jeanne Gang, the design architect, described it as having a textured, almost woven profile created by the alternating concave and convex surfaces.
  • Although the design is widely praised, critics take exception with the blow-through level and the mechanical floors, which disrupt the the undulating facade.
  • The facade utilizes six shades of blue-green glass, with the darkest shades on the thinner floors and the lighter shades on the wider floors.
  • This is the world's tallest building designed by a female architect.
  • The building will consist of 169 hotel rooms and 405 condominium units.
  • Vista Tower was officially topped out on April 26, 2019.
