  • The principle feature of the interior is the grand rotunda under the dome. It is 64 feet in diameter and extends from the basement to the attic.
  • The Capitol overlooks the city from a park on high ground east of the Des Moines River.
  • Architect A. Piquenard, a native of France, also designed the Illinois State Capitol.
  • The Iowa State Capitol, generally Italian Renaissance in design, combines feature of various styles. The most striking features are a central tower with gilded dome, and four square towers capped with copper-hued domes on the corners of the two wings.
