Facts

  • The building's name was changed to the World Trade Center in 1968 after the merger of the International House and International Trade Mart. It was the first World Trade Center organization in the world.
  • Situated along the Mississippi River at the foot of Canal and Poydras Streets, the most important intersection in all of New Orleans.
  • The trade center's cruciform style is designed to represent the four points of the compass, a nod to New Orleans' role in international commerce.
  • The cross-shaped plan and external sun-shade louvers make this one of the city's most distinctive high-rise buildings.
  • Tallest building in New Orleans from 1967-1969; surpassed by the equally distinctive Plaza Tower.
  • The building was once home to the Plimsoll Club and a revolving cocktail lounge called Top of the Mart, which offered a stunning view of the city.
  • Vacant since 2010, the building is awaiting a proposed conversion into a Four Seasons hotel and luxury condominiums.
