Facts

  • Rumored to be haunted by the ghost of John D. Rockefeller.
  • Built on the former site of the Weddell House, the city's premier hotel of the late 19th century, affectionately known as "the Astor House of the Great Lakes".
  • The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
  • The building was purchased in 1918 by Josiah Kirby, developer of the Superior Building for that company which he founded. When his company declared bankruptcy in 1923, the Rockefeller family repurchased the building from the jailed Kirby, restoring their name to it.
