Facts

  • Named after its builder and owner, William Fleming Winecoff, who was one of the victims of the fire.
  • The now empty Winecoff Hotel is the site of the worst hotel fire in US history. In the early hours of December 7, 1946, the Winecoff hotel fire killed 119 people. At the time, the building had neither fire escapes, fire doors, nor sprinklers. For two and a half hours, fire fighters battled to save the majority of the 280 guests. But the ladders only reached to the eight floor, and their nets were not strong enough to withstand jumps of more than 70 feet. The Winecoff fire became the watershed event in fire safety. Within days after the disaster, cities across America began enacting more stringent safety ordinances. The fact that the Winecoff fire remains the worst hotel fire in the US history is testimony to its impact on modern fire safety codes. Next to the building, a marker, dedicated to the victims, survivors, and the firemen who fought the Winecoff fire, can be found.
  • This is currently seeing renovations and will re-open in 2007 as the Ellis Hotel.
  • The hotel conversion will cost $26.8 million.
  • December 2007; The Ellis Hotel is now open within this historic building.
