Facts

  • The façade is Georgia marble decorated with various metals, tilework, colored marble, and numerous mosaics and murals.
  • The building is situated in a landscaped setting overlooking the Scioto River, surrounded by pools, lawns, terraces, and foliage.
  • The Ohio State Library is located inside. This is one of the largest state libraries in the country, and is decorated with murals by artists such as John F. Holmer of Cincinnati, Rudolf Sheffler of New York, H.H. Wessel of Cincinnati, and Leroy Daniel MacMorris of New York.
  • Groundbreaking took place on November 19, 1929; construction began on October 31, 1930; the cornerstone was laid on May 16, 1931, and the building opened on March 27, 1933.
  • A worksite explosion in the unfinished building in April 1932 delayed completion of construction.
  • It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
