Facts

  • Constructed of some one million bricks, the Shot Tower was the tallest building in the United States before the Washington Monument was completed in Washington, DC.
  • Built for the production of gunshot, the Shot Tower is one of the last examples of this building type remaining in the United States.
  • It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1972.
  • Molten lead was passed through a sieve at the top of the tower. The resulting droplets formed into perfect spheres as they fell, then cooled and solidified in the vat of water at the bottom.
