Facts

  • This was the first Washington Monument to be undertaken and the first of importance to be completed.
  • Funds for the roughly $200,000 project were raised by lottery and contributed by the state.
  • It consists of a base, 50 feet square and 28 feet high, supporting an unfluted Doric column. The column is surmounted by a stepped dome crowned by a 16-foot statue of Washington, carved by the Italian sculptor Henrico Caucici.
  • The monument was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 as part of the Mount Vernon Place Historic District.
  • In the base is a collection of Washington relics.
