Facts

  • The two stairways project from the north and south facades, leading down to shoe-shaped projections at ground level.
  • Tallest building in the historic Lockerbie Square neighborhood, just northeast of downtown.
  • This senior citizens' high-rise is named for John J. Barton, mayor of Indianapolis from 1964-1967.
  • At the 15th floor the building's width increases to support larger units on the top 6 floors.
  • The fin walls outside the community room on the 15th floor are perforated by doorways which connect the passageways into one long balcony on each side.
  • This was the first public housing high-rise in Indianapolis, which until then was one of the largest cities in the United States with no high-rise public housing at all.
  • Until the 1990's, this building was directly connected to the adjacent John J. Barton Annex by a 4-level residential skybridge that spanned East Street.
