Facts

  • Glaspaleis was originally built as a department store for the former Schunck department store chain.
  • The reconstruction of 1976 was devastating for the original architecture. The building facade was recladded with brown glass panels transforming the open structure with plenty of natural light into a more closed introspective building. During the economical decline of Heerlen in the late 1970s the building was neglected and saved a couple of times from demolition. In de mid 1990s the architectural value of the building was rediscovered and total renovation was planned for the end of the century. In 2003 the renewed Glaspaleis was opened as the cultural hotspot of Heerlen, making it once again a main attraction of the city.
