Facts

  • Planned as an 18-story building, the first ten stories opened in 1964. Eight additional floors were completed in 1970.
  • A second 18-story north tower was never built.
  • The building is crescent-shaped, with dramatically different facades.
  • The southern facade is of concrete, with 292 narrow vertical slit windows of varying height. The northern facade is a wall of windows with anodized bronze aluminum piers providing a strong vertical emphasis.
  • Often referred to as the "Punch Card Building" by locals because its south facade resembles a classic computer punch card that was popular when it was built.
  • Architect Wenceslao Sarmiento followed Arabic and Saracen architecture of the 8th and 9th centuries to design the building with maximum light and minimum heat.
