Facts

  • The plaza around the building is one of the world's great urban spaces, surrounded by views of the Chicago River, Michigan Avenue, and many old towers including the Wrigley Building and Tribune Tower.
  • Over 40 cylindrical railroad tank cars were used as forms for the caissons, which required extra girth and strength because of the high water table by the river. Some of the tubes were permanently incorporated into the foundation.
  • The building and its grounds are the historic site of John Kinzie's log cabin, and also of Cyrus McCormick's 1947 invention of the reaper.
