Facts

  • Mercy is the oldest hospital in Illinois (not the building of course!). It was chartered in 1851 and treated victims of the Chicago Fire.
  • The hospital and medical center are located very close to Michael Reese Hospital, forming a small medical district.
  • The building is the southernmost highrise on the Near South Side, before the border of the Douglas neighborhood.
  • The interior is extensively decorated by Spanish artist Nacio Bayarri.
  • The top floor projects beyond the building's perimeter, and contains a convent housing the sisters who run the hospital.
  • The notches in the top floor are lit during Christmas season with alternating red and green lights.
  • The perimeter columns are detached from the façade, giving the building a strong, classical appearance.
