Facts

  • The courtyard is aligned with the raised courtyard of the Civic Opera Building directly across the Chicago River.
  • In the fall of 1993, a 180x18-foot art deco mural by John Warner Norton was removed from the concourse's vaulted ceiling and put in storage indefinitely.
  • On the east side there is a public courtyard and plaza overlooking the Chicago River, with a concrete floor to match the limestone of the building and the river railing.
  • The concourse leading to the train station was originally the main lobby, with an even floor in place of the ramp up to the bridge at Canal Street.
  • The Norton mural over the old lobby was commissioned for the original tenant, the Chicago Daily News. It was dominated by diagonal lines, and divided into three sections: Gathering the News, Printing the News, & Transporting the News.
  • A ramped concourse through the south side of this building serves as the main entrance to the Ogilvie commuter rail station in Citigroup Center.
