Facts

  • A 23-story addition was built in 1928 at the south end of the 17-story section, which was finished in May 1915 as the Peoples Life Building.
  • The south section is taller, and was designed by a different architect (Burnham Brothers), but follows the general design scheme of the older part. The Wells Street entrance is split between the 2 sections.
  • In 1920 Ernest Hemingway got a job in this building writing for a magazine called the Cooperative Commonwealth.
