Facts

  • The original design included a dome rising from the center of the building.
  • The ground floor is crossed north-south and east-west by wide public passageways with vaulted mosaic ceilings.
  • The previous city hall was in the Lake View Building on Michigan Avenue.
  • In 1926 plans were prepared by Holabird & Roche to add 23 floors to the building, to be supported on caissons drilled below existing light courts.
  • The city government occupies the west half of the building, and the east half houses the Cook County government.
