Facts

  • This S-shaped building was the first of what was intended to be four interconnected phases. The entire complex would have continued another 400 meters south to Roosevelt Road.
  • A 10-story S-shaped atrium runs the length of the building.
  • Each apartment is wedge-shaped, fanning out either towards the windows or inward to the atrium.
  • The building shelters a private boat dock on the Chicago River, under its west side.
  • A much earlier proposal by the same architect called for a cluster of very tall cylindrical towers connected by skybridges, on the site just north of Polk Street.
  • The apartments were converted in 2001 to condominiums by American Invsco. They were deconverted back to apartments in 2019 in a joint venture by Wolcott Group, Marc Realty, and Ruttenberg Gordon Investments.
