Facts

  • Members of famous Chicago families who have lived here include Robert Hall McCormick III and Potter Palmer II.
  • Another art deco tower of similar scale and style by the same architect is located on the opposite corner at 1301 North Astor.
  • The back side of the building has an unusual shape, with overhanging walls and varied fenestration.
  • Overlooks Goudy Square Park to the east, with views of Lake Michigan three blocks away.
  • Floors 2 - 3 and 5 - 8 follow a standard floor plan, which is arranged on two axes to fit the building's irregular lot. This floor plan took 22 months to design.
  • The 4th floor was custom-designed for its original tenant, Mary Dana Stone, who gave up her house on the building's lot in exchange for the apartment.
  • The duplex penthouse on top belonged originally to Sterling Morton, chairman of the Morton Salt Company. Its design has been compared to the moderne miniature at the Art Institute of Chicago's Thorne Rooms.
