Facts

  • The two smaller buildings to the south are also part of the Gage group, which is named after milliners David and George Gage.
  • The two central piers burst into effusive ornament right under the cornice. The detail was designed by the original architect, Louis Sullivan, who is considered a master of decorative arts.
  • Built in 1899 as an eight-story building. The ornamental flourishes at the top was pushed upwards when four stories were added by different architects in 1902.
