Facts

  • Originally built as an athletic club, the building was sold to Northwestern University in 1977 and converted to student housing.
  • At one time the building was saved from demolition by Streeterville residents who protested plans for a new high-rise on the site.
  • A series of murals by Otto Hake depicting scenes from Chicago's history was commissioned for the 2nd floor dining rooms and installed in 1938. They were restored in 1995 and moved to the lower level.
  • The building still contains several gyms, handball courts, and an Olympic-size swimming pool.
  • The Lake Shore Club, which occupied the building from 1927 to 1977, included many of Chicago's leaders as members including mayor Richard J. Daley.
