Facts

  • The building was named for the famous ocean liner Aquitania.
  • The roofline was originally ornamented with a balustrade topped with tall urns above each pier on the facade.
  • This was originally planned as one of five similar buildings between Argyle and Ainslie Streets on the lakefront.
  • While the exterior design is of the beaux-arts style, the lobby is far more modern with fern-leaf wall lamps and other art deco details.
  • Built as a luxury apartment hotel by George K. Spoor, co-founder of the Essanay Motion Picture Company. Several movie stars of the early silent era stayed here.
  • The lobby features murals by the artist Louis Weinzelbaum, added a few years after the building's completion.
