Facts

  • A similar tower with concrete X-bracing was built earlier at 780 Third Avenue in New York City.
  • On the east wall of the office lobby there is a plaque dedicated to structural engineer Fazlur Khan, who worked on this building and died before it was finished. Another memorial to him is located in the Sears Tower.
  • The building's name is a conflation of "Ontario" and "Erie", the streets at its two entrances.
  • In 1986 this building won the Best Structure Award from the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois.
  • The X formations consist of concrete infill panels which act together to form a truss tube. There are no steel beams behind them.
