Facts

  • The tower has the smallest floors of any skyscraper in downtown Chicago.
  • The Mather Tower was named for Alonzo C. Mather, whose railroad car manufacturing company built the structure.
  • In 2000 the top 4 floors were demolished because of structural deterioration. For two years the building was missing its cupola, and for a while it was uncertain whether it would ever be restored.
  • On the weekend of November 23-24 2002, a helicopter lifted a new steel framework from a river barge to the top of the tower, restoring the cupola.
