Facts

  • The building's structure is a steel "sandwich", with a composite concrete-coated steel structure at the 5th level and regular reinforced concrete above and below. This was done to allow long spans in the ballrooms and to minimize disruption to the preexisting lower levels during construction of the tower.
  • One of the city's most luxurious hotels, the Peninsula has a lobby to match with an elegant entry space on Superior Street and several grand halls on the fifth floor.
  • The hotel was rated the best in the United States in the 2003 Zagat Survey (released October 2002), which includes all hotels, resorts, and spas.
  • Constructed atop a previously-existing 4-story retail complex. The stores at the base are designed to look like individual small buildings.
