Facts

  • Four transfer beams, located between the first and third floors of the building's west tower, transfer the load of the exterior columns on the entire north side of the 75-ft.-long, 35-story west tower. The beams took nearly two weeks to complete due to the complexity of the reinforcing steel configuration and limited work area available.
  • First, the site for the $95 million project was formerly occupied by a printing plant for The New York Times. Rather than completely demolishing this structure, the design and construction team used the foundation walls of the Times' printing plant to support new exterior columns for 101 West End Ave. by cutting the existing wall down 4 ft. and casting a new 2 ft.-8-in.-wide cap beam over the wall.
  • Very similar to West End Towers right to the south across the street.
