Facts

  • The height of 60 metres was chosen to celebrate sixty years since The University of Nottingham (in whose campus the monument stands) received its Royal Charter.
  • This is Britain's tallest freestanding monument-cum-artwork, a title formerly held by B of the Bang.
  • The design is the result of a competition which attracted in excess of 400 entries.
  • The width varies from 2.19 metres at the base to 4.82 metres at the top.
  • The monument is construced from 854 tonnes of concrete and steel and is supported by 47 precast concrete piles.
  • The construction costs of around £800,000 were met by an anonymous donor.
  • The base is a 6-metre concrete column, topped with a 52-metre lattice mast.
