Facts

  • Originally built as a 5-story building when it opened in 1953. It replaced the Hippodrome Theatre, a neighborhood landmark built in 1914.
  • Construction of the original 5-story building was filmed by the U.S. State Department to document American construction techniques from excavation to completed structure. The film was entitled "Sidewalk Superintendents" and was planned to be released in foreign countries.
  • A year after it opened the building was expanded to 8 stories and reached its current height in 1961. Both additions were designed by architects Kahn & Jacobs.
  • The original international style facade was given a modern glass curtain wall in 2005-2006.
