Facts

  • One of New York City’s largest renovation projects, Turtle Bay Towers posed a number of unique construction and design challenges.
  • Heavily damaged from an earlier gas explosion, the entire structure required extensive reconstruction in 1978, designed by architect Bernard Rothzeid. This allowed for the creation of truly open, loft-style residences in a part of New York City not known for offering space of this magnitude.
  • The 337 cooperative units of Turtle Bay Towers include many apartments with banks of picture windows and bright greenhouse enclosures.
  • Panoramic views encompass the Chrysler and Empire State Buildings, the East River and distinctive prewar office towers.
  • The renovation architects were recognized with an Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects in 1978.
