Facts

  • The building blends the 1st & 2nd place designs from the Tribune Tower competition in Chicago: the gothic detailing of Raymond Hood's winning tower with the art deco streamlining of Eliel Saarinen's runner-up.
  • The design arose out of a wish to create a sculptural tower, which had to be black to minimize the visual interruption of windows.
  • American Radiator's image is dramatically reversed at night when glowing windows burn in the dark facade and the crown is lit up.
  • The building's design was reinterpreted at the end of the century for the postmodern Main Plaza skyscraper in Frankfurt.
  • Das American Radiator Building ist Vorbild zahlreicher ähnlicher Bauten diesen Typs geworden, beispielsweise dem Main Plaza in Frankfurt am Main.
