Facts

  • The tower of Saint Mary's Basilica is said to be the tallest free-standing granite spire in North America. It was begun in 1869 and finished in 1874.
  • The basilica contains arguably the most impressive collection of stained glass windows in Maritime Canada.
  • The current windows are replicas of the originals that were destroyed in the Halifax Explosion of December 6, 1917.
  • In 1984, Pope John Paul II visited the basilica to celebrate the bicentennial of the establishment of the Catholic church in Nova Scotia.
