Facts

  • Considered to be a masterpiece of communist design. This three-pillared tower is modeled after a Soyuz space rocket.
  • Tallest structure in Prague.
  • Inaugurated on February 18th, 1992.
  • There is a restaurant at the 63 meter level.
  • Prague Tower is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers.
  • During high winds, maximal sway at the top of the tower is 120 cm.
  • Not only it is the hub of TV and radio connections, Prague Tower also carries environmental quality monitoring and meteorological devices.
  • The elevators travel about 4 meters per second.
  • Built on the grounds of the Jewish Cemetery in Zizkov, also known as the First Jewish Cemetery in Olsany, which was dug out by the Communists in order to make way for the tower.
  • Construction started under the Communist regime in 1985, however, it wasn't completed until after the revolution, in 1992.
  • The fire escape reaches only 124 meters up the tower.
  • On a clear day with good visibility, one can see up to 100 kilometers away.
  • "Miminka", local for Babies, was added by the artist David Cerny in 2001; these are proportionally small black figures of babies who seem to be crawling up the poles of the tower.
  • Total weight of the large edifice is 11,800 tons.
  • Took the role of Petrin Transmitter as Prague's chief transmission tower, which had carried TV signals for the capital city since 1953.
