Facts

  • Largest stadium in Russia upon completion.
  • On 20 October 1982, disaster struck during a UEFA Cup match between FC Spartak Moscow and HFC Haarlem from The Netherlands. Sixty-six people died in a stampede, which made it Russia's worst sporting disaster and most famous cover-up at the time.
  • The stadium hosted the 1980 Summer Olympics opening and closing ceremonies as well as the 2018 World Cup final.
