Facts

  • The building stood damaged long after the coup was overthrown, and imediately the black burns on the white facade became a local landmark, so famous that it even became a tradition for newlyweds to take a photo with the damaged building.
  • The damaged tower appeared in one episode of the "Police Academy".
  • The White House was portrayed on a 50 Kopek stamp from 1991.
  • More than $300-million (US) was spent by the Russian Government in 1994 just to restore and renovate the building; more than it spent on development programs and fundamental academic research in the entire nation.
  • The inscription on the base states: "House of the Government of the Russian Federation".
  • Built on the opposite bank of the Moskva River from Radisson Royal Hotel.
  • The building was involved in the notorious attempted coup to overthrow the government in early 1990s, during which the tower was eventually bombarded by heavy artillery.
  • The building serves as the Russian Parliament.
  • Clad with white marble and a relatively narrow red granite strip around its base.
