Facts

  • In 1986 the project was taken over by two new architects, Lech Robaczyński and Marzena Leszczynska from Wadeco Sp. z o.o.. The bidding for general contractor was won by the Yugoslavian consortium Generalexport/Giposs which supplied this service to repay old debts to Polish banks.
  • The plot was long before occupied by the Great Synagogue, built in 1878 and destroyed by the Nazis on May 16, 1943 from the order of Jürgen Stroop as a 'symbol' of his triumph over the Jewish Uprising in Warsaw's ghetto.
  • Due to the site’s development the Jewish Community has struggled for its rights to the place, and in the following months their efforts will culminate in the handover of the 19th, 20th and 21st floors to them.
  • Construction began in 1965, but was put on hold two years later due to reservations about the foundations.
  • The intial project was designed in 1961 by three architects – Jerzy Czyż, Andrzej Skopiński and Jan Furman – and called for construction of an 80-meter tower.
  • The original design was revised in 1971, with a height increase to 100 meters. Construction resumed in 1974 and continued until 1980, only to be halted for another 6 years. The steel core was erected during this phase by Mostostal Warszawa S.A..
  • Blue Tower was finally completed in 1991, after 26 years of construction and two long interruptions, creating an unbeatable construction record for such a high building in Central Europe.
