Facts

  • When the tower was completed in 1482 the spire reached 127m. Unfortunately the spire burned down in 1577 after bonfires were lit on the tower.
  • The church is located opposite the neo-classical Stadhuis (City Hall).
  • Among locals the tower is known as d’Olle Grieze, which means Old Grey One.
  • Standing in front of the tower, you can see the tower leans a bit to the right.
  • It has been the city's tallest structure since 1647.
  • This is the 4th tallest churchtower in the Netherlands, and it shares this title with the Grote Kerk in Breda.
  • Located at the Grote Markt, regarded as the heart of the city.
